Advanced English – Module B: Critical Study of Literature

Brief Summary:

  • Students develop analytical and critical knowledge, understanding and an appreciation of a literary text.

  • Develop informed personal responses about the text in its entirety.

  • Understand quality of text and the notion of textual integrity.

  • Students study ONE text.

  • Analyse its construction, content and language.

  • Construct their own interpretation of the text.

  • Base judgements on research and reading.

  • Consider contexts and its reception.

  • Explore ideas.

  • Investigate the perspective of others.

  • Appreciate and express values about the aesthetic and imaginative aspects of a text.

  • Compose creative and critical texts of their own.

  • Language forms and features must be commented on.

  • Students need to draft, appraise and refine their own texts.

If you have been around the traps long enough, then you will notice that this module is quite similar to the old Year 12 ‘Critical Study of Text’.

The major requirements: students have to study ONE text and create their own creative and critical texts.

Some of you may now be thinking, I can re-use my old materials to avoid reinventing the wheel.

Others are thinking, this is the time to refresh and revitalise our programs.

Wherever your decision might dwell, the obvious idea is to choose quality literature. Why? Well, then there will be many personal responses, a representation of textual integrity, critical essays on the text and available lectures.

Standard English – Module B: Close Study of Literature

Brief Summary:

  • Appreciation of a substantial literary print text.

  • Personal response required – across the entire text.

  • Study ONE literary print text: prose fiction or drama or poetry.

  • If poetry is chosen, then it is a selection of poems from one poet.

  • Identify, analyse and respond to the text.

  • Discuss how meaning is shaped.

  • Examine the author’s use of conventions.

  • Students are to construct critical and creative responses about the text.

  • Focus on style, tone, mood and analysis.

  • Personal interpretation of the text’s meaning and importance.

  • Plan, draft and refine their own written and spoken texts.

Once again, it reminds me of the old Year 12 ‘Close Study of Text’.

Many of you might yahoo at this stage and reuse your past resources with some updates.

As long as your chosen texts are not on the H.S.C list, then life is good.

The Challenges

Finding interesting texts that will sustain the interest of all of your students across the whole study of Module B.

Module B feels like a soft warm blanket that is tucked in the whole way around the bed.

There are no surprises.

It is teachable.

You just need to find the text that will suit your teachers, cohort and Module.

It’s time to pull your laptop under the quilt or doona and start researching quality print texts.
